About This RoleAI processing…

We're transforming the grocery industry

At Instacart, we invite the world to share love through food because we believe everyone should have access to the food they love and more time to enjoy it together. Where others see a simple need for grocery delivery, we see exciting complexity and endless opportunity to serve the varied needs of our community. We work to deliver an essential service that customers rely on to get their groceries and household goods, while also offering safe and flexible earnings opportunities to Instacart Personal Shoppers.

Instacart has become a lifeline for millions of people, and we’re building the team to help push our shopping cart forward. If you’re ready to do the best work of your life, come join our table.

Key Responsibilities

  • 1
Overview The Partnerships team sits within Instacart’s Core Experience organization and is responsible for how Instacart shows up inside partner ecosystems like Airbnb, Grubhub, The New York Times, and the next wave of strategic partners.
  • 2
As a Staff Software Engineer, Partnerships , you will set the technical direction for how we build and scale Embedded Instacart over the next several years.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience as a software engineer building and operating large-scale backend or full-stack systems, including significant time in a technical lead or Staff-level capacity.
  • Proven track record designing and evolving platforms or integration frameworks (e.g., partner ecosystems, B2B platforms, or multi-tenant systems) where reuse and clear contracts are critical.
  • Deep experience with distributed systems and APIs : service boundaries, data modeling, reliability, observability, and performance for user-facing flows like identity, cart, checkout, or payments.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and uplevel engineers across levels (L4–L6 equivalent), including guiding them through system design, tradeoffs, and execution in ambiguous problem spaces.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills, with experience partnering closely with product, design, data, and external or partner engineering teams to ship complex, multi-surface features.
  • Experience architecting or leading partner integrations at a consumer or platform company (e.g., marketplaces, subscriptions, payments, content, or logistics), ideally across multiple partners or domains.
  • Comfort working in environments where strategy, architecture, and execution are tightly coupled — you enjoy both setting the long-term direction and getting into enough detail to unblock the team.
  • Prior experience in a highly cross-functional role requiring regular interaction with external stakeholders (e.g., partner engineers, business development, legal) and the ability to translate between business and technical constraints.
